The Love of Summer: My Dog and Me

Liz grew up loving dogs and longing to have one of her own. It wasn’t however until her early 40s that she finally became a dog mother. This book encompasses the life of Summer, a golden retriever, with Liz. Summer’s first major decision in life was at the age of three weeks old when she choose Liz as her dog mother. Both Summer and Liz embark on an unknown journey of a lifetime and put their entire faith in each other. Follow them in all parts of everyday life, from dog training classes to holidays away and meet Summer’s many friends, both human and dog.Enjoy reading about their life together – the ups, the downs, the good, the bad, the embarrassing and the sad. Laugh out loud in places and cry in others. The book is a feel-good read of the joys of dog ownership that also embraces and includes the inevitability of eventual parting at the end of life. A poignant account of two lives coming together and then life after Summer. The Love of Summer: My Dog and Me is available to order now at the link below.

Dogs TrustEvery copy of this book sold will generate a donation to Dogs Trust of £2.00.Dogs Trust believe all dogs deserve to live life to the full. Since 1891, it's been working for a better future for dogs and the people who love them. When a dog is in distress, it cares for them. When a dog needs a home, it finds them a loving family. When an owner needs a helping hand (or paw) – or they just can’t cope, it’s ready to step in.

Happy Readers

  • “What a really lovely book.”

  • “I was looking forward to reading this and once l started, l couldn't put it down. What a connection Liz had with Summer from the start and it was great to follow them through their many adventures together. Each chapter offered so much more than the previous one and l didn't want their story to finish. I believed l was there with them and my only regret was that l wasn't able to meet Summer during her amazing time with Liz. The humour and love that came through the story enhanced their time together and it is something that will always remain here now. I feel privileged that l have been fortunate enough to read their story and reflecting now just brings a smile to my face. Thank you Liz and Summer for connecting and sharing your beautiful story with me.”

  • “I have finally finished the book, I've tried to stretch it out as it was just so relaxing. I admit I put it down for a fortnight as I was approaching the last chapters. I knew what was to follow. It certainly brought some tears. I think you did a wonderful job and told what a treasure Summer was.”

  • “I’ve just finished The Love of Summer. I’m crying my eyes out! I knew what would happen- as it always does- but always so sad. However, your writing brings Summer to life- she lives on in your words. I laughed at her antics and thoroughly enjoyed ‘meeting’ your family and friends and revisiting places that have treasured memories for me too. Beautifully written, Liz. You’ve come a long way and I can’t wait to read your next book.”

  • “This is not the type of books I usually read, and I never own a dog. However, I really enjoyed reading it, far beyond my expectation and learned so much from it, really an eye-opening and educational experience. I am so impressed by the profound love Liz has towards Summer. Honestly speaking as a man from a different culture, I only understood how a human likes a dog, but not really how one loves a dog. I appreciate the way Liz tells her story. It is precise, funny and conveys serious meanings, especially in simple and conventional environments and situations, where most people would take everything granted without realizing the hidden messages and significance. This book is a valuable memorial for a special dog by a special woman.”
